So the name of the game on the web is to make money from your website. Banner advertising isn’t new by any stretch of the imagination – but we need to keep coming up with new or inventive ways to show sponsor banners.

I whipped up this quick little piece of code to rotate some banners for a client. Now, this isn’t rocket science – but my client is extremely non-techy, so they wanted to be able to update the images on their own.

So rather than code the image files into the AJAX or PHP, I created a simple text file so the client could edit it from their content manager, or if they dared – use FTP to download the file, edit it in TextPad and upload it again.

There’s still lots of room to improve this piece.

• I might add URLs to the code, so the banners are clickable
• I could add click tracking to the banners so my client can know which banners are being clicked
• I could change up the animation/fade effect with Scriptaculous
• I could preload the banner images when the page loads

Lots of interesting things to do – and I just love to code them.
